2023 Summer Assignments

Please see below the "Book Club" selections for the summer. Choose a book you would like to read for the summer. When we return to school, we will have a “Book Club meeting,” where you will meet the person who chose the book to discuss it during the Activity Block on September 7th.

During your reading, jot down 5 questions you would like to discuss and bring them into school, along with your copy of your chosen book, for September 7th. Your Book Club moderator will be assigning a participation grade that will be shared with your English teacher.

I hope you get many opportunities to enjoy a good book this summer. Please check the drop down menus below for any additional assigned summer work.

Please read a nonfiction book of your choice. Please take notes on the author’s purpose (why she/he wrote the book) and method (writing techniques).

Please read and bring to class three copies of articles from periodicals, and your notes that answer/ explain the why and how of each essay you read.

AP LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION (12th Grade):
Read A Room with a View by E M Forster.

Using the chapter titles as your guide, compose brief but complete summaries of each chapter. Additionally, make a list of elements of humor in the text. (These elements may be situations, phrases, specific word choices - anything.)

ST. JULIE DIVISION (7th and 8th Grade):
Choose a book to read from the given list. Then write a letter to the author of your chosen book.

As you read consider:
1) How does this book make you feel? Happy, sad, angry, frightened, etc.?
2) Do you recognize yourself or someone you know in any of the characters or incidents?
3) What valuable lessons does it teach you about life? Or What did you learn while reading the book?
When you write a letter, you can write anything about the book! It’s not a book report, though, so spend only a little time describing the plot. Talk about what struck you about the book or about as much of the book as you’ve read so far! Make connections between yourself and the book. Or talk about the book’s characters and style. Here are some sentences you might finish:

This book is a challenge for me because . . .
This part of it reminded me of the time when . . .
I could not believe . . .
I was confused when . . .
If I had written the book, I think . . .
I was surprised by . . .
I noticed that the author used one of my favorite devices . . .
After I read this passage, I began to think of . . .

Your letter should be at least one page long typed, doubled spaced Times New Roman font 12.
This will be turned in on the first day of school.
